Greetings: I am currently using a Whatman Hydrogen generator. Periodically the electrolytic solution needs to be replaced. According to the MSDS sent by Whatman this solution consists of a 22% NaOH (by weight), "formulated reagent grade, free from metal ions".The cost of this solution is very high and I would like to produce our own in house solution (I know this voids the warranty (long past)). Does anyone know a supplier of this grade of NaOH or any information regarding the formulation of the solution. I have tried the usual suppliers, Aldich, Fluka, Fisher etc..
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Dan

If you are using BDH or Merck product you can get the AR grade or extra pure quality NaOH solid. Just weight 22g of the solid and make up to 100g with Demin water, that will give you 22%w NaOH. If you need more than you just have to weigh accordingly.

Just make sure you use the right amount of NaOH. The concentration is only one part of the equation. Too little of the blend added and the generator will not produce gas and too much will do the same - plus more-than-likely damage the electro-chemical cell assembly.

Next time check out Peak GHydrogen generators. You do not need a catalyst.
