We are analysing PAHs present in hexane soot in the lab using the Varian Saturn 2000 GC/MS. The problem at the moment is reproducibility within a sample. We have beautiful repeatability with the four ring PAHs; the variability is within the five and six ring PAHs. It has been suggested to us that the PAHs may be adsorbing to the surface of the liner. Another suggestion was to increase the temperature of the trap and injection port. We are running the samples splitless with a DB-5MS column. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated.

The larger PAH´s have quite a high volatility, so we found it very useful to use a temperature-programmable-injector which is heated up to 300 degrees C.
