In the 1960`s when G.C. was new I built several sets using stationary phase filled glass columns.With some idea of mass spectroscopy and electrophoresis I made one column with a central wire and an Al foil layer on the outside of the glass. I could then apply p.d`s of 100to 800V. Using f.i.d and Argon ionization detectors the only effect seemed to be that the detectors were swamped. As this was Woodall Duckhams own in-house lab I was not encouraged to "play" any more.Ihave often wondered whether there would be any effect on different groups retention times?
