I started using static headspace GC a couple of months ago but I get terrible resolution. The peaks have a "good shape" but are overlapping. Before using the HS-GC I did manual injection of the headspace of a sealed vial with a gas tight syringe and the resulting chromatograms were very good. What happened? Should'nt the machine give the same or even better results than manual injection?

The results should be the same if all factors involved are the same. This is difficult to do when transferring a method from manual to automated. Are you using split or splitless injection? If splitless, try split.

I believe I already know what's the problem: I need to have more pressure of carrier gas in the headspace itself than in the column. I'm working with very low pressures that aren't strong enough to push the gas sample into the GC. I'll try to fix the problem.
