You can purchase Grob test mixes from Agilent, Alltech, Supelco, etc. It contains hydrocarbons to evaluate recovery, fatty acid methyl esters to determine separation ability, an acid and a base to evaluate column suitability for these types of compounds, alcohols to detect hydrdogen bonding sites and an aldehyde to detect adsorption other than hydrogen bonding. The test mix is run and peak shapes evaluated to determine what types of problems, if any are in your column or other component of your GC system.
