Area to noise threshold

Deos anyone have a "rule of thumb" about the correct area to noise threshold for analysing low levels of sample? We have the default setting at about 3000uV, but a colleague of ours says that we should have it at about 100.

a general rule of thumb would be limit of detection at 3 times the noise level (analyte present, but quantity too low to determine), and a limit of quantitation at 10 times the noise level.

However, there are reasons to want to increase the limit of quantitation above 10x the noise.
