Please enlighten on reducing baseline noise for Varian 3800/PFPD, 1041 splitless injector, SPB-5 capillary column, helium as carry air, used to analyze reduced sulphur compounds (H2S, CH3SH, CH3SCH3, CH3SSCH3) below 50 ppm. Currently the noise is 2000 uVolts, my target is below 1000 uVolts.
In addition, does pack column usually come with a higher noise comparing with capillary one?

In general the PFPD can not accept the flow rate of packed columns without a split unless hydrogen is used as the carrier gas. The column you use is not optimal for the analysis if hydrocarbons are also involved and the GasPro or SilicaPLOT columns are much better (0.32 mm ID).
