I want to analyse MF resins by GPC using DMF as solvent.
Somebody has told me I have to use a derivatization tecnique (silytation with BSTFA). Is it really necesary to use it?
Could you give more details about this technique and the analysis of these kind of resins?

If You are thinking about crude (no etheryficated) melamine/formaldehyde resin, then direct for GPC You can use DMF + LiCl as eluent and some hydrophilic column (polihydroxymetacrylic or polyvinyl alcohol).
