Dear friends,
I am planning to setup a new Gas Chromatography laboratory for analysing dissolved CFCs in groundwater. I am a novice and donot have any experience of handling GC. I would like to have your guidance about the purge and trap method of Gas Chromatography for CFCs. Which is the most suitable GC instrument for CFCs analysis. What are the column specifications, which standard precolumn technique is to be adopted? What is the latest method of sample injection? What is tha latest method of purging and Trapping?
Any basic information on these lines is welcome. Plese try to get back to me at your earliest.

I remember when I messured these compound at a reserch in the greenland see. We used an electroncapture detector for the chromatograph.
The purge and trap system we used was built for sample of 50 ml and we purged for about ten minutes. The thing was that we used a pre column to be able to make an "heart cut" eg be rid of all unintressant things. To cool the trap we used liquid nitrogen and to heat it we used boiling water. The resarch was done under Lisabeth Fogelquist demand and I belive that she is still working at the Marine Chemistry department at Göteborgs Universitu in Sweden

Assuming you have some money to buy a new GC and Purge and Trap device, go shopping. Call the GC vendors, talk to their sales people. Don't pick the least expensive package; pick the company that offers you the best training and application support. Any of the GC vendors can do this, some better than others. If you have the time & money, attend the Basic GC or Purge & Trap training from your two favorite candidates. It will be educational, and you will get a chance to try the competing instruments before you buy. Granted training is not free, but you will be spending a lot of money on the hardware, and repeating the training from two different sources will help you a lot.
