After a day off, my TCD detector's response to a certain analyte peak went from 170000 to 30000 area counts(low sensitivity). After fiddling with the positioning of the column inside the detector, rechecking for leaks and scrutinizing the autosampler syringe performance, no improvement to this low area was made. The TCD is over 7 years old (but has been used lightly over this time). Is it likely that the filiment has fried? Will the entire TCD cartridge need to be replaced? Thanks.

I've been using TCD's for 10 yrs - 24 hrs/day/ 7days/week without ever turning off. They have survived periods of technicians forgetting to change the gases! These are some of the most durable pieces. For one to up and go bad is possible, but more than likely it's something else. Column leakage due to temp ramps? Without any information, hard to say.
