We are considering the purchase of a Varian GC-MS instrument with the Combi Pal Autosampler and the SPME option. Does anyone own this instrument? Also can anyone comment on Varian's instrument service.

Instrument service is very much dependent on the local service engineers. My own experience with Varian has been excellent although that was before the spinoff of the instrument division.

I have used the Varian Saturn 2000 for several years with almost no problems. Both the instrument and the support have been excellent.

I've been using a Saturn 2000 w/ Combi-Pal/SPME for a year w/ very good success. One problem w/ "dead" detector was fixed very quickly (24hrs) by local service engineer. SPME works as advertised, but method development can be very time and labor intensive. I seemed to get more and better info out of Supelco/Sigma-Aldrich, though Varian has some very knowledgeable people if you can fight your way thru the bureaucracy.
