Could anyone recommend me a book or handbook which is good for Mass Spectral Interpretation? I need an advanced one not only on the introduction of MS interpretation. Your information will be very helpful. Thanks.

"Interpretation of Mass Spectra", McLafferty, F. [Available from University Science Books, Fax # (415) 332-5393] is a good resource.

Good Luck!

I don't know how advanced you want the book to be and if you need mass spectral interpretation of a specific compound family but:

If you need mass spectral interpretation of peptides proteins you should get:Interpreting Protein Mass Spectra, A comprehensive resource
by A. Peter Snyder. ISBN 0-8412-3571-6. Oxford University Press: Oxford (2000).

For general purposes except from the one indicated by Joe (which is the first one appeared relative to mass spectra interpretation) you can get:

1)Interpretation of Mass Spectra
by Fred W. McLafferty & Frantisek Turecek. University Science Books: Sausalito (1993).
2)Understanding mass spectra, a basic approach by R.M. Smith and K.L. Busch, Willey editions,(1999).
3) A beginner's guide to mass spectral interpretation by T.A. Lee. Wiley editions 1998).

I liked the third one (looks more as a handbook for students) as it makes the mass spectal interpretation by different family compounds (functional group). The second one is more advanced than the third one...

Now if you are interesting for a specific compound family fragmentations only, you should have a look in the "Mass spectrometry reviews" journal where comprehensive articles appears sometimes concerning a specific family (e.g. polynucleotides etc.).

Hope the above helps,
