Big problem with HP 5971 MSD diffusion pump

I noticed that the vacuum in my MS was not sufficient. Looking for a possible cause I disassembled the MS. Then it appeared that diffusion pump oil had burned, there was something like tar inside. What might be the possible cause of this? Defective too hot switch? Anything else?

The oil should be changed at least once a year. If it is not, you will have the tarry residue you found. In severe applications the oil should be changed more often. The oil is expensive, and is often neglected.

I wonder in case of oil burning do you have any characteristic ions in mass spectrum or some other
preliminary indications of oil burning.

Hopefully there will be no ions from the oil in the mass spec, this would indicate backstreaming from the diff pump which is not good at all. About the only indicators are the viscosity and color of the oil (the oil will darken with age and air exposure.) I realize this doesn't help much with the 5971 since you cannot see the oil. Actually the price of the oil is cheap in comparison of have to repeat questionable work.

Mark

The oil is a silicon Oil (to be able to resiste to very high temperature) it's very expensive if you ask to leybold, alcatel or all vacum trade mark 100€/500ml but if you contact oils providers thermic oils, mecanic oils and so on they can offer you better price we pay almost 50€/l now.
If your electric heater plate is burn, there is a amercan company doing this part for almost all diffusion pump it's DALTON ELECTRIC. The material is stronger than the genuine one but I agree with mark : Check the color of the oil. And don't be sad When a turbomolecular pump shut down it's more expensive.
