When plumbing an lcms where is the ideal place to put the split to the MS. I have seen it two ways.
1. Tubing goes from column into uv detector and the split occurs after the UV detector
2. Tubing comes from the column to the split and is diverted to the UV on one Leg and the MS on the other.
Are there any inherent benefits to either one of these setups. Please let me know.
Thank you

In (2), the leg diverted to the MS won't have the UV's dead volume as part of it's flow path, but the flow through your UV isn't guaranteed to be constant. In (1), you guarantee constant flow through at least the UV, even if your ion source experiences partial or total clogging. If you're doing qualitative analysis, you might not even notice a partial clog of your ESI source unless it becomes a total clog.
