We need some advice on N2 generators for LC/MS. Does anyone have any experience with the Whatman/Balston systems? We have ruptured membranes in 2 generators, and are trying to resolve the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are using a Whatman Model 75-72 N2 generator with a Jun-Air Model 2000 air compressor. This is hooked up to a Finnegan LCQ. Also, does anyone have experience with other N2 generating sytems?

Our lab has used the Whatman 75-72 nitrogen generator for a year without any problems. Ours runs off "house" air and is connected to a Hewlett-Packard 1100 LCMS.

We are also using a Jun-Air 2000 air compressor with a DWT N2 Generator... , well, it is the second Jun-Air, since the first one broke down after two days - cause not identified. Momentarily we are experiencing problems with lots of water (condensation) which gets into the N2 generator by way of the compressor... which it shouldn't. Result: water in the N2 generator, pressure differentials from 1-2 bar between entrance and exit of generator and a reduced N2 generating capacity... maybe it is not the N2 generator which is the problem, but the compressor!

The Jun-Air 2000 compressor requires an air dryer accessory to reduce the outlet compressed air dewpoint before going into the nitrogen generator. Please contact your local Whatman specialist for support and solution. All membrane issues are directly related to Jun-Air compressors not using an air dryer device.
