please can someone provide a means of finding document/information/journal (for student with very limited knowledge!) setting out advantages and disadvantages of analytical techniques for quantative determination of hydrocarbons?

There are a number of basic texts on GC. The primer most of us started with is "Basic Gas Chromatography," McNair and Bonneli affectionately known as the "green book" published by Varian but found in any college library, I hope. "Modern Practice of Gas Chromatography" by Grob is the bible on GC, I guess.

A GC with an FID is one excellent way of measuring hydrocarbons, especially if you wish to speciate, that is, tell one hydrocarbon from the next. This forum is alive with experts on hydrocarbon measurement. Give us some details on exactly what you what to measure, how much is expected to be there, and what the matrix is, and you can get lots of good advice here. Presumeably you have access to a GC, columns, carrier gas and flame fuel, etc., etc.
