Can anyone describe how gas chromatography works?

Gas chromatography is a chromatographic technique that can be used to separate volatile organic compounds. A gas chromatograph consists of a flowing mobile phase, an injection port, a separation column containing the stationary phase, and a detector. The organic compounds are separated due to differences in their partitioning behavior between the mobile gas phase
and the stationary phase in the column.

Separation is also effected by component boiling points.

Might want to check out the GC discussion group also.

A quick search on "gas chromatography tutorial" on the web turned this up -- SCIMEDIA: Gas Chromatography, which is basic but gets it right. There are some pictures (including an upside-down packed column...) and additional info on detectors.

For fun, take a look at Mickey Introduces Chromatography (!!)
