From ChromFAQ

A "high-pressure-mixing" (also called "two-pump") HPLC pumping system uses two or more high-pressure pumps. The controller varies the relative flow rates of the pumps to generate the desired mobile phase. The two flow streams come together in a mixing chamber which smooths out variations in composition.
