In the variable-wavelength absorbance detector (commonly called the "UV" detector because of the usual wavelength range) light of a desired wavelength is selected and passed through the sample cell. This diagram is an oversimplification; most detectors are "double beam", comparing the light that goes through the sample to light that does not go through the sample.
