can anyone tell me why acidic substances are usually separated by thin layer chromatography whilst basic substances are mainly separated by gas chromatography. Thanks

How about hydrogen bonding by the carboxl group which lowers volatility? However, in about the last 20 years, when I did perform GC it was for acids (methyl esters of fatty acids).
Also, underivatized acids have a tendency to decarboxylate at elevated temps, some can apparently survive GC, though.
