From time to time we find ourselves needing to prep from a "jelly" sample matrix. We can extract out part of the matrix, but find the initial "jelly" hard to quantify.

Is this a carbohydrate, protein, or synthetic jelly?

We do not deal with biological samples, this is a synthetic "jelly"

I have handled petroleum jelly samples by dissolving is hot hexane or heptane. I then extract the hexane solution solution with methanol.
Synthetic polymers like SBRs and acrylics are often crosslinked. Attempting to dissolve them causes the cross-linked network to swell into a gel. Quantitative extractions of the soluble material can be accomplished only with long extraction times.
