Hi, I am looking to develop an impurity method for maleic acid, the main impurity here is fumaric acid. Does anybody have an idea of how I could accomplish this?

Thanks in advance

Paul Byers

Any low pH mobile phase on almost any C18 column will seperate these two compounds. Try 90% 50mM H2PO4 + H3PO4 pH 2.5 and 10% MeOH or ACN with your favorite low pH stable C18 column.

If you need a little more retention, try one of the reverse phase columns that contain an imbedded polar group. Columns that come to mind are E.S. Industries Aquasep, YMC AQ, Princeton Chromatography Pro, and there are a number of others. I just can't remember them off the top of my head.

As Tom suggested above, it should be a straight forward separation.
