Does anyone have a particular article or text that they would recommend specifically for developing/troubleshooting ion pairing methods? I'm finding that Snyder/Kirkland glosses over some areas of the subject.

In my opinion, the best explanation is found in Bidlingmeyer et al, J. Chromatogr. 186 (1979), 419-434.

I second Uwe's recommendation above. The article cited is very good but I feel it is a little dated. Due to many advances in column manufacturing and stationary phases, many methods that were previously developed as ion paring methods could be developed today without ion paring agents.

The new stationary phases that include an imbedded polar group can often be used to when increased retentivity or different selectivity is needed, especially for organic acids. The newer base stable stationary phases can often be used at a sufficiently high pH that many amines can be analyzed at or above their pKa.

I'm finding that I am resorting to ion paring much less often now than in the past.

Can you really find the paper Uwe mentioned above?
