I've got a prac on "Determination of the solubility product of calcium sulphate by ion exchange chromatography". On the prac, there's a warning "Never allow the level of liquid to fall below the surface of the resin". Why is this so?

Here's the instructions;
1) Obtain a column packed with resin. If the surface of the liquid is below the resin, or if there are air bubbles trapped in the resin then....

Any help is appreciated!

The short answer is that you want an even flow of buffer across the entire cross-section of your column (hard to do if the buffer has to go around trapped air bubbles).
