Have come across method looking at chemotherapeutic agent using this high level of ammonium formate buffer at acidic pH. Compound would generally be in tertiary amines group. I assume method is using ion suppression but would it not be better to develop ion pair method and thus reduce the high salt concentration. Method appears to work well although tailing evident. Could be the best that can be achieved Any opinions anyone?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The real question is whether any benefits would be worth the considerable effort involved to develop a new method. My $0.02 worth would be that if the method is being run frequently, then the high salt concentration may be a concern from a hardware longevity point of view. If the method is run occasionally, you probably have better things to do with your time!
