I have two symmetrical peaks with similar peak heights and areas with minimal resolution (~1.5). In order to calculate the resolution, is it incorrect to integrate the peaks by dropping a perpendicular in the minimum of the valley between the two peaks? If one of the peaks was considerably larger, what would be the correct way to integrate it? Any references on this topic?

If you look at Chapter in the USP, it describes how to perform the resolution calculations. It is actually quite easy. If you do not have access to this book, give me a call.

Sorry. That chapter number is 621 (chromoatography). It was left out in my previous response
