Can anyone tell me how to analyse acid chlorides, sulphonic acid chlorides and bromoketones by HPLC.

Which would be the best media to use, silica, carbon or a polymer ?

Thank you

This depends on the hydrophobic part in the molecule, i.e. C-C, C=C, C-C-triplebonds, C-H, C-Cl, C-Br-bonds, etc. If you have enough hydrophobic bonds, you can try reversed phase (C-18)columns, using a 0-100% Phosphoric acid (50mM)-Acetonitrile gradient at 210 nm. If you don't have enough hydrophobic molecular surface area, than you can try special columns for hydrophilic solutes (s.above messages, especially the YMC-column noted by Dr.Bilke).

What about a C4 or C8 column? I myself have only used C18 and polymeric columns and have never had the chance to try these smaller chain columns. Would these be more retentive towards "smaller" organic analytes?

Peace
