There is a serial port on my detector.
Is it possible to connect it to the
serial port or parallel port of my
regular computer and collect data
by using Gram software?
Do I need any driver for it?
Is it necessary to install a analog
to digital converter on my PC?
Thanks for your information.

You will need some software to send commands to and decode the serial communications. You can hook up a terminal emulator program to see what is coming out of the detector now. Your best bet is to get the manual for the detector and see if they tell you what the output is.

If it outputs your signal, you will not need an A/D converter.

What software can send commands?
Is Gram ok?
Can you recommand any terminal emulator program?
Thanks a lot!

Anonymous,

I doubt the serial port on your detector is used to send out the detector signal. If your detector also has a coaxial looking connector, this is probably the analog output.

The serial port is usually provided as a remote connection to connect devices such as a fraction collector, solvent recycler, etc. Thus the serial port sends out signals such as start of a run, begining of a peak detected, manual contact closures, etc.

The digital output of a detector is usually via some type of IEEE connector. If you want to grab the analog signal you will need some type of analog to digital converter
