I set up a batch to run over the weekend...when I came back, I had no solvent left and I can only assume that air was run through the column for at least 48hrs. Are there any suggestions as to how I can go about to check the extent of damage to the column?

Most HPLC Systems are unable to pump air, therefore it is unlikely that air was pumped through your column. It is more probable that some level of damage was caused to your pumps.

As anon. stated the column in probably fine. Just rinse the buffers out of the column (10% organic) then flush the column with 100% organic then back to rinse then mobile phase and check your column. Good luck

I agree with the opinions above. I'd quickly verify that my pump was still operating up to snuff, too. Check the flow rate for the pump with a column installed and look for leaks from the piston seals, sticky check valves, etc...
