Hi All,
Is it true that using percentages of Methanol greater than 15% has an adverse effect on the silanol groups on silica for normal phase chromatography. Is there a way around this problem? Is there anywhere that I could get a reference on this problem?

Colin

You can use as much methanol as you want on your silica column. It is strongly adsorbed, so it will take a while or some washing if you want to go back to straight hexane as the mobile phase. You can even put water on silica without damaging it.

MeOH and water have no effect on Silica...
keep the pH BELOW pH 7.0 and temp below 30/C or silica will disolve ...
good luck
