Does anyone have any advice for purchasing a radio detector (gamma) for HPLC...Specifically reputable brands and what features to look for. Thanks.

What nuclide and amounts of activity are you intending to analyse?

I have used a Bioscan Flow Count with a B-FC-3300 scintillation detector for samples of this type, down to perhaps a few kBq per injection.

Sensitivity can be adjusted by exposing more or less tubing to the detector crystal but be aware that excessive volume will be detrimental to preserving chromatographic peak shape.

As usual this is a many faceted problem. I have been hedging to answer as we bought our Berthold some years ago, therefore, the suggestion: Check "radio HPLC detectors" and "radio chromatography" in google.com. Be aware that manufacturers seem to be in a flux (Berthold became EG&G, then PE, then Berthold, Packard is now PE Packard Biosystems.....). For us the following were important: Sensitivity, flexibility (we did not want a system which could not easily be converted from beta to different gamma [BGO crystal]), integration of radio-peaks as well as UV, Fluorescence, etc, GC, and cost. The integration needs special attention as normal software can not satisfactorily handle the cpm or Bq from a radio-detector, "homemade" modifications seem to be questionable as well. It is best to have demonstrations. If you need only qualitative info you may do allright with a simple NaCL crystal detector (not necessarily made for HPLC). (Send me an e-mail if the info to this point doesn´t help)
