Hello, I have to analyse polymers like PLA, Polycaprolacton or polyhydroxybutirate by GPC/SEC hplc, and I would like to know if anyone can give me informations about the concentration and the injection volume that I have to choose. Thanks for help. Tonio, France.

Hi
Although SEC columns are not so prone to overload as those operated in adsorption modes, you should follow some rules. Check molar mass and intrinsic viscosity values of your polymers. In order to avoid chain overlapping effects and/or even chains aggregation (self-coagulation), which may preclude correct calculation of molecular weight distribution, calculate the upper limit of concentration c=1/intrinsic viscosity. Below this concentration chains are mostly individual. Using solutions with fixed concentration (below or equal to c=1/intr. visc.) try to find a compromise between the magnitudes of injection volume and detector response.
Good luck. Kirill
