What would be the best Liquid chromatography conditions for the separation of Quaternary ammonium salts (aliphatic substitued imidazoles)?
Would SCX do the job?

Mike,

I checked around and failed to find anything on quaternary imidazoles. The closest thing I could find was a separation of alkyl pyridinium quaternary ammonium salts (this application used 20 mM HCl and 76% acetonitrile on a neutral macroporous resin, an IonPac NS1 column). An SCX column might be used for this application but this sort of phase tends to be very highly retentive for quaternary compounds. Plan on using a very high ionic strength if you want to use such a phase. Also, the chromatography will be much better at low pH if the SCX column is silica based.
