Hello,
Can someone explain how to make a 6 normality (6N) solution of pure nitric acid? I need this to clean out my HPLC syringe.
Thank You

Yikes, I'll tell you how, but think hard about if you really need to do it. Concentrated nitric acid is about 15.9N, therefore you need to make a dilution. 378 mL of concentrated nitric diluted to 1-L will give you 6N. Make sure to add the acid to the water and be careful, the last thing you want to do is hurt youself (or others) for the sake of a HPLC syringe. Buy a new one.

6N HNO3 is great for cleaning the stainless steel parts of your HPLC. It is good for extending the life of your check valves. But don't let it near your columns!

Also, I agree with A.A., chuck the old syringe and get a new one!

Better yet, get an autosampler so you can use your time more wisely.
