I´m working for a small company and we may consider to purchase a HPLC. I know its difficult to tell how much it will be but I´d like to know how much we have to spend for a HPLC. We don´t want to make exotic analysis its considered to control the qualitity of synthesised lipids and maybe later drugs.
If its to expensive we´ll do it by contract analysis.
I just need to know the price range of an average HPLC.
Thank you in advance

Dear Anonymus;
You can count on spending anywhere from about 18K up to 40K for a HPLC instrument. If you buy a refurbished or demo unit perhaps you will get a discount of about 20-30%.

In analyzing the cost of the equipment take into consideration the cost of contracting something out. Depending on your separation, the LC would pay for itself in a couple of months.

I would also throw in my 2 cents worth: make sure to get an autosampler as it's more precisse than a person, especially useful in validation experiments. Worth its weight in gold.

Thank you.
Well, I have right now 65k€ in my budget plan and a bit more if needed.
Are there any fundamental differences between the various companys regarding the prices ?
Lets say I pay nearly twice as much when I buy from company x versus company y.

Dear Anonymus;
It seems like you are located in Europe since your budget is expressed in Euros. Well, over thre I understand everything is more expensive, I work in a multinational company and that problem has been discussed several times.
Instruments are about 20-30% more expensive in Europe because duties, taxes, dealership fees etc. In technical terms I could recommend you to select between Agilent and Waters, they seem to have the best units, but their prices are high in general.
Good luck;
Benjamin

Benjamin is right : Agilent and Waters are defenitely the market leaders over here in Europe. Check if they have offices (with engineers) in your country. A full system (with autosampler/PC/software) is about 40k€ with single wavelength UV and 50k€ with PDA. These are prices without commercial discounts.

Take into account the quality of the service of your region (what is there experience? how long they are working for that company?)
