I know that is possible buy the C18 and others modified silica phases in different particle sizes and pack yourself the column.

This technique is rarely practiced in today's chromatography world. On the surface it would seem cheaper but once you add up the cost of your time spent to hand-manufacture the column, especially if you are not familiar with the process, as well as investigate problems associated with your home-made columns, it is far cheaper to purchase them. After all, you cannot buy time!
Also, as Anonymous pointed out, your variability would be far greater than that of say, Phenomenex, Waters, Alltech, etc. They have already invested the time and money into the manufacturing and quality control processes involved with column manufacturing. No need for you to reinvent the wheel, as it were.
