I am an inexperienced HPLC user. I have been assigned a task to classify columns. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to look at the structure of a drug and have an idea of what column to use based on the drugs functional groups. Can anyone point me in the right dirrection? Thanks.

The vast majority of small molecule pharmaceutical methods are developed on C18 reverse phase columns regardless of structure.

If you want to classify columns I would look at:
http://patapsco.nist.gov/srmcatalog/certificates/870.pdf or other similar test mixes used to classify a large cross section of commercially available columns. Good luck.
