Does anybody know the way to separate Maleic Anhydride from Maleic Acid using HPLC?
ACN/Water, MeOH/Water won't work..
Thanks
Vlad

Anhydrides are about as stable in dilute acid as they are in water. Base, however, catalyzes anhydride hydrolysis, so avoid base. I don't remember what the stability of maleic anhydirde is, but if it is stable in water, then a separation with dilute (1 mM)phosphoric acid should work. Anhydrides are surprisingly(at least to me) hydrophobic so don't expect the anhydride to zip off just past the acid peak.
If the anhydride is hydrolyzing druing the separation you will get a fronting peak for the anhydride.
The molar absorbtivity of anhydrides is considerably larger than acids so there will be no trouble detecting at short UV.
