I am a new comer. I have a question about chromatography. Is it possible that solute exchange functional group with the column?

I can't see a way how this could happen with standard bonded phases. I only can see how an analyte can react with the surface-bonded ligand. An example of this would be the reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with an amino column.
