System Suitability Requirement for FTIR Spectrometer

I know this is a chromatography discussion group, but figured I'd ask anyway. We developed an analytical method to quantitate an active ingredient in an OTC skin care product. We are now validating the method, and are kind of stuck with the system suitability requirement. Does anyone know how to demonstrate system suitability for an FTIR spectrometer?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Since there is no colum, and no mobile phase, there is less that needs to be done. It would probably be sufficient to run a quick qualification of the instrument. Our FTIR software comes with a qualification option using polystyrene film. If all those tests pass, there in no reason to believe that the instrument is not suitable. If you wanted to show that you are getting constant recoveries from your standard, run 5 or 6 standard prior to the sample, and look at the recovery, and the %RSD. I'm not sure it would work to apply the peak symmetry since you are not looking at something eluting over time. BTW, are you testing for dimethicone?
hope this helps.

Matthew,

Thanks for your comments. Yes, we are testing for Dimethicone in a skin care product. The method is an FTIR method.

Regards,

Chris
