i would like to know the retention behaviour , mobile phase compatibility , and major uses of c-4 phase and its benifits compare to regular C18 AND c-8 columns , same way i would also like to know same things for C-1 compare. Mainly i am intersted in retention bahaviour compare to others , what is going to play hydophobicity or the residual silanols .which will be the major effct.

The retention is lower with the shorter chains. Since the mobile phase composition changes, the selectivity will change as well. The surface coverage that is achievable is slightly higher, but C18's are endcapped with C1 chains, and taking this into account the number of residual silanols is similar on C18's and C1's. The preparative loadability is higher on C18, but you have to do the chromatography correctly, otherwise you are limited by the solubility of your sample and you won't see a difference between a C18 and a C1.
Of course, all of this assumes that the packings are prepared on the same quality support with the same quality procedure.
