Has anyone besides me noticed that one can get a relatively unbiased comparison of performance and features for a $20 toaster, but there is no equivalent unbiased source (that I'm aware of) that gives a rigorous performance and features comparison of $70,000 analytical instruments?
Let's start a Consumers' Comparison Guide for scientific instrumentation that is free of Marketing and Sales bias, that provides critical comparisons of vendors' equipment, how it really matches up and really performs. Let's start with HPLCs and ICs.

100,000s of toasters are purchased each year. How many HPLC systems? I don't know but it will be a relatively small number.
It's a wonderfull thought but unless there was funding (who would do this? Vendors? Consumers?) this will never fly.

Re: LCs
Agilent and Waters are the 2 players in this market. Salesmen are usually happy to provide a demo system for evaluation. There's no reason you could not have 2 systems side by side for testing...
