Does anyone know the shelf-life of HPLC grade water? Is there a potential for bacterial growth in an unopened bottle?

This type of thing has been discussed several times. We have had water (Milli Q) stand in a cold room for more than 6 months without change (UV). If you get dust into it it can have microbe colonies in a few days. You should check it (not so easy, though).

It would really be surprising if they sterilized it or even if they just used sterile filters without presenting an advertising hoopla about it. They definately have to make sure to keep dust and other organics out of the water. Microbes will have a hell of a time to multiply with only H20, but, on the other hand, traces of other elements will be present, also C02 and oxygen. From experience I would say these are normally too low for microbe comfort (means: If itīs clean it keeps).

Dear Anonymus;
I have experience using HPLC grade water over long periods of time (6-12 months). My observations tell me that an unopened bottle stored at RT will keep clean and still usable even after 6 months. Obviously I did not know how long the same bottles were stored by the supplier before shipping to my lab.
I have never seen a bottle getting visibly contaminated even after a few weeks after opening. Therefore it seems like as stated above, clean water will stay clean for a long time.
Good Luck;
Benjamin
