Hello friends,
We are thinking about looking for POCl3 that could possibly exist in a drug substance. Does anyone have experience with this analyte? Ion chromatography or GC/MS or NPD perhaps? Apparently this is a very reactive (and nasty) compound and simply might not exist under conventional analysis conditions. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance...

POCl3 is extremely reactive with water and organics. As soon as your substance is not totally dry you have to look for phosphate and chloride.

I think that to look for something this reactive the strategy would have to be to dissolve the sample in an inert solvent and then add something that would react with POCl3 to form a stable, unique derivative that would then be analyzed.
Determination of P or Cl will provide a less than statement of POCl3 concentration if there are no other sources of P or CL in sample.
