In the April 97 LC GC JD gave some guidelines
on system logbooks. This should give you some ideas.

We find that two or three different forms of system logs are most useful. We use a 3-ring binder kept with each system with a series of forms (from our SOPs) that are filled in to indicate system configuration, problems and repairs, routine maintenance, and other system-related items such as performance checks. For an LC/MS we recommend 2 such books, one for hte LC and one for the MS, since the two are quite different. Then our analytical log (injections, column ID, etc.)is kept on what we call a "run sheet" which is just a template on which the info is written and then filed with hard copy of the c-grams. Just remember the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle -- recordkeeping can become a burden. Keep enough information to track changes and to be able to correlate any injection with a given instrument configuration and I think you should be OK.
