Is anyone using 1987(plus or minus) vintage Shimadzu SCL-6A/ LC-6A/ SIL-6A/ SPD-6AV type instruments?
Has anyone had unexpected breakdowns with any kind of 10 to 16 year old HPLC equipment? Seals, lamps and columns are expected. Electronic and electrical equipment problems would not be.
Does anyone own any of these Shimadzu components, but not currently using them? I know that some of us keep the older equipment, just-in-case, and then the new stuff does not break.
We have all of the above, and they are still working flawlessly, but we still have concerns...

Electronic and electrical equipment do have finite lifespans and will fail eventually.

We have an old Beckman LC hanging around in our "graveyard"... I think it had a Shimadzu UV-variable wavelength detector. We used the Beckman until the power supply board went and (obviously) the part is no longer available.

I wouldn't worry too much about Shimadzu series 6A equipment. We have a system such as you describe in our lab. Shimadzu will continues to support this equipment. I do have another vendors equipment in my lab from that vintage that is considered by the vendor as obsolete and the vendor will no longer support it. In this case there are independent equipment repair people that can help. I did have one repairperson actually disorder and replace a component on an "dead" board, but this is rare. Today's culture dictates you replace board if available. Luckily my repairperson has a heap of junked instruments for replacement parts.
