Does anyone know why 0.1% TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) in acetonitrile turns yellow after a few days of sitting?

You probably hydrolysed the acetonitrile..Ritter conditions..

How about trimerization of acetonitrile under acid catalyst? a cyclic triazine formed is more likely to give a yellow solution.

If you have a stainless steel filter on the end of your solvent line, you may have metals corroding from the filter. We have a stored bottle of 0.1%TFA in Acetonitrile, in a brown bottle. The bottle has been stored for six months or more with no color.

I newer found, that acetonitril/TFA solutions turn to yellow. Generally we use such eluent for the separation of peptides. We have to prepare the eluent freshly every day, because after 2-3 days the absorption of the eluent became high (over 0.5 AU) in the region below 230 nm.
Best regards

TFA is sensitive to light. Even exposure to overhead fluorescent fixtures is enough to promote decomposition of TFA. Leave it long enough, and further product chemistry may occur. Storage of TFA solutions in amber bottles, or coating your bottles with heavy duty aluminum foil will help.
