Hi!
In my lab we're having a discussion about using Nitric acid for cleaning the entire HPLC-system (without column).
Can I use Nitric acid (e.g. 1%) or would this be kiling my system? I use a HP1100 system with normal stainless steel tubing.

Nitric acid will not harm your system, but unless you have a real solid reason to passivate with nitric, why bother?

You can use a nítric ácid until 5 % for 15-30 min to clean up your system without problems, but, after that you need to wash it for 48 hours (flow rate 5 ml/min if we are present and 0.2-0.3 ml/min if we aren't)

On an HP 1100 system - just make sure you bypass the degasser unit if you have one also. We use a 4N solution flushed for 10 minutes at 1 ml/min. We monitor the UV at 350 nm until the baseline drops. Then we rinse the system with water at 5 ml/min for 1 hour. We check the effluent's pH until it is neutral.

we are useing 20% NITRIC acid to passivate hplc
system with 3ml flow for 5 minutes. wash system
with water until PH is neutral.
