I hesitate to open this can of worms but is anyone familar with literature articles comparing HPLC instruments? (Hopefuly performed by someone other than an instrument vendor)
We would like to evaluate different instruments with focus on autosampler carryover and DAD sensitivity. We don't want to re-invent the wheel so if someone has developed a good method for comparing instruments, we will give it a go.

I am not aware of such an article. Before I started working for an instrument company, my research lab would compare instruments by sending both a sample and a method. In most cases, and this is still the case for the company I work for at least, they will (and we will) be happy to run an analysis for you.
