There is a monograph in BP98 for Apramycin - related substances, where the recomended column is a Fast cation exchange column with polymeric beads and
sulphonic acid functional groups. It is said that the most suitable column is Dionex fast cation exchange column. We decided that Dionex /cat. No P/N 39591 is the column that we need, but it is no more manifactured. What column would you recomend instead?

I can recommend A Nucleosil SA column made by Macherey Nagel. I havent used this column with your particular application but I have used it for a wide variety of Cation exchange applications and I have found it to be one of the best on the market.

Probably the closest equivalent would be the Wescan "Cation R" column now sold by Alltech. You will probably have to adjust the buffer ionic strength because I believe this is a little lower in capacity than the old Dionex column, but it should be in right ballpark.

I have done a search on www.chromatography.net and came up with the following information. The Dionex /cat. No P/N 39591 is called IonPac Fast Cation I.
The base material is Ethylvinylbenzene-DVB, non-porous with an ion capacity of 70 ueq/ column and
is considered to be a medium hydrophobicity column.
The following are non-porous, cation exchange columns considered to be medium hydrophobicity columns by Dionex. (Ion Capacity is not given
by the manufacturer)
IonPac CG10
IonPac CG11
You may want to call Dionex Technical Support at 800 346-6390
I hope this helps. There are many other cation columns that could work, however, these columns share the most similarities with the IonPac Fast Cation I.

Have you thought of Poros HS resin from PerSeptive Biosystems? The HS is a high capacity cation exchanger in different bead sizes.

Actually, the closest equivalent to the Fast Cation column is actually the PCX 100 column. It is derived from a slightly more hydrophilic monomer so selectivity could be somewhat different. Of course, while the Fast Cation column is no longer in the price list, it can still be obtained on a special order basis. If you're interested in this, you should contact Ruthann Kiser.
